Scheduler appears to be hung

Hi,
I have a SQL Server 2000 SP3 running on Windows Server 2000. I have moved
two databases that are used continously about two months back to this server
and since then I have noticed this error coming up every 10 to 15 days.
The Scheduler 1 appears to be hung. SPID 0, ECID 0, UMS Context 0x023339C0.
Error: 17883, Severity: 1, State: 0
The Scheduler 0 appears to be hung. SPID 0, ECID 0, UMS Context 0x0233C8D8.
Error: 17883, Severity: 1, State: 0
The SQL Server just freezes and becomes non-responsive. The above error was
present for almost 8 minutes before it started responding. At one time, I
wasn't even able to do a Remote Desktop to the server to check why the server
is not responding and later on I found that it had the same error. Any
information regarding this will be highly appreciated. How many processors do you have running? This implies two, or at least one
with hyperthreading. You might try turning one off completely.

instance properties. Also, you might want to apply SP4...

will experience an increase in performance with HT disabled. Test in your
environment.

Scheduled transaction log backup never finish

Hi,
I run a scheduled transaction log job back up serval database's log
everyday, it was fine before, however, today, one of jobs seems can not stop
running. Checked no deadlock process, checked log file in disk, only two
database can not finish. using dbcc opentran, no active tran. change those
two database to another job, same thing happening, What could I do?
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
YifeiCancel the job using the Process Info under Current
Activity.
Have a look and see if there are any error messages being
generated in the SQL Server Logs, then try again.

Thank you for reply, I do cancel the job and restart it again, the problem
still exist.
Actually I restart sql server, it's been fixed.
But, it looks strange.

Schedule SQL Express back up from ASP Page

Hello,

I need to schedule SQL Express backup from ASP Page. I was trying to use SQLDMO to schedule jobs but found that SQL Agent is not supported in Sql Express. I tried to use Scheduler.SchedulingAgent.1 to add task in schedular but getting Invalid class string error. Schedular dll is only supported in site server. What would be the best solution for me to schedule back for SQL Express?

hi,

as you already noticed, SQLExpress does not provide the native SQL Server Agent to support scheduled jobs like backups..

you have then to rely on third party scheduler, like http://www.valesoftware.com/products-express-agent.php, http://www.codeproject.com/useritems/SQLAgent.asp (free code)

personally I do recommend relying on the native OS scheduler (AT/SCHTASK) where you can define your standard schedules to execute cmd file including SQLCmd.exe calls, like
[cmd file]
SQLCmd -E -S(Local) -Q"BACKUP DATABASE [Pubs] TO DISK = N'D:\folder\Pubs.bak' WITH FORMAT, INIT, NAME = N'Pubs-Full Database Backup', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10" >>d:\folder\BckOutput.txt
[/cmd file]

which backups the Pubs database to the d:\folder\Pubs.bak file, outputting the backup execution to a text file, d:\folder\BckOutput.txt, you can later inspect for results...

additional info about this can be found at http://www.sqldbatips.com/showarticle.asp?ID=27 and http://www.sqldbatips.com/showarticle.asp?ID=29, where another free tool by an MVP fellow, Jasper Smith, is available for download to help performing backup tasks..

Schedule backup with SQL 2005 Express

How do I schedule a backup with SQL Server 2005 Express. When I right-click a database and choose Tasks -> Back Up...
I don't get the option to schedule the backup. How do I do?

hi,

SQLExpress does not provide the SQL Server Agent, thus you can not schedule a "native" backup or whatever task via a SQL Server Agent job..

you have to rely on the native OS scheduler, writing your own command file including the actual BACKUP DATABASE... statement to be executed, or on other solutions even based on the OS scheduler, like http://www.sqldbatips.com/showarticle.asp?ID=27 and http://www.sqldbatips.com/showarticle.asp?ID=29, third party solutions like http://www.lazycoding.com/products.aspx or http://www.valesoftware.com/products-express-agent.php, http://www.codeproject.com/vb/net/SQLAgent.asp, or custom solutions based on the Service Broker as indicated in http://blogs.msdn.com/rogerwolterblog/archive/2006/04/13/575974.aspx

Ok! Thanks.

Is SQL Server 2005 Express edition the only one that do not provide the SQL Server Agent?

Thats right.

I just want to use the osql -E order, but the system tell me that it fail to connect to the database, it may caused by the remote connections closed, but actually I allow the remote connection.
Is there another way to backup the database in the sql Express?

The complete syntax for backup is proveded in Books Online, please search there for syntax help. If you are not being allowed to login, then you are either providing the wrong instance name or you are using an account that doesn't have permissions.

The most common error people make with SQL Express is that it is installed by default to an instance name, not the default instance, so you have to pass the entire instance name when connectiong:

osql -S <machine>\SQLEXPRESS -E ...

See if adding the instance name resolves your problem.

If you are unfamiliar with the BACKUP syntax, you can use the UI command of SSMS(Express) and create a script which can be laterone copied to the AT job using the SQLCMD utility as Mike mentioned.

Schedule Backup issue using Enterprise Manager

I have set up EM to back up several databases on a machine running Win2k
Advanced Server and SQL Server 2000 SP2. On each db, I right click and
created a backup task and set a reoccurring scheduled time for daily back
ups. What's weird and someone frustrating is that the tasks ALWAYS append
existing data which makes the backups unnecessarily large and the scheduled
time never sticks. I'll go in a click Overwrite Existing Data and set the
back up time each day and it never says these changes. I've even tried to
remove the task(s) and create new ones from scratch and it won't let me
remove the old ones. Each day, it appends the existing data and the
scheduled time is never there (even though the auto backups do occur...not
sure why).
So...each and every day, I have to go and manually backup each db. Not a
huge deal but a bit frustrating since EM should do this for me. Any ideas?
Is this a known issue?
TIA!
-SIf you use Enterprise Manager and the Backup Database task
by right clicking on a database, this will create a job
named something like YourDatabase backup
The job will have a T-SQL step that will execute the T-SQL
backup statement that was generated when you scheduled the
task. If you need to make changes, you need to modify the
job rather than trying to go back in through the task part
of Enterprise Manager.
You can modify the schedule from the schedule tab of the
job.
If the job was initially created to append, the backup
command in the job step with include WITH NOINIT. You can
change this to WITH INIT if you want to overwrite the
backups. You can find more information on the BACKUP
DATABASE statement that is generated and it's options in
books online under backup.

Hi All:
my local computer using sql server to maintain several databases

can setup schedule job to backup database automatically everyday , for
exmaple back up database everyday at 5 pm.. etc
Cheers

Tip: Create two maintenance plans -- one for user databases and the other
